DISCLOSURE? WHO CARES?

The cast

Rogue’s Gallery

Everywhere else on this site, we argue that Disclosure — whenever it finally arrives, in whatever redacted, footnoted, subcommittee-approved form — will land as a nothingburger. We stand by that. But an argument about the ending is not an argument about the people who got us to the last chapter, and this room is where we set the thesis down for a while.

These twenty-four are a cast. The whistleblower who traded a career for a sworn statement. The journalist who became a conduit and then became the story. The physicist who ran the experiment nobody would fund twice. The debunker who has been right often enough to be resented for it. The elder statesman who has been saying the same eleven sentences since the Ford administration. The rock star. They do not agree with each other. Several of them cannot be in the same room. Some are almost certainly wrong, one or two may be lying, and a few have been vindicated in ways their critics have never quite acknowledged out loud.

"Rogue's Gallery" is affectionate. Take it the way a fond biographer means scoundrel.

House rules

The record, not the ridicule. Anyone can be made to look foolish with a clip reel. We are not interested. Every entry here is written as though the subject will read it, because several of them will.

Claims stay labeled as claims. When someone says a thing, we report that they said it, when, under what oath, and to whom. We do not launder testimony into fact by dropping the attribution, and we do not dismiss it by burying it in scare quotes. If a claim has been corroborated, we say by what. If it hasn't, we say that too.

Corrections welcome. Show us the evidence and we will fix it, promptly and visibly. Dates, titles, clearances, quotations, the precise wording of a denial — all of it is correctable. Send it. Being wrong in public is survivable; staying wrong on purpose is not.

The questions are real questions. We think the answers will disappoint. We do not think the asking was foolish. Those are different positions, and this page depends on the distinction holding.

The four headings

Every figure gets the same four, in the same order, at roughly the same length: Background, The Claim, The Record, The Question. No one gets a fifth section for being credible and no one gets a shorter one for being inconvenient.

That symmetry is the fairest thing we can offer, because it means the format can't take sides — only the evidence in it can, and that is the reader's business, not ours.

Every entry here was independently reviewed for accuracy and fairness before publication. If you are one of these people and your card is wrong, say so and it gets fixed — that correction goes to the front of the line.
